A donor-advised fund (DAF) is a flexible, tax-efficient way to support the causes you care about. Think of it as a charitable investment account that allows you to make a charitable contribution now and recommend grants to eligible nonprofit organizations over time.
How a Donor-Advised Fund Works
You make an irrevocable charitable contribution.
You contribute cash, appreciated securities, or other eligible assets to a donor-advised fund maintained by a sponsoring charitable organization. You may be eligible for a charitable tax deduction in the year the contribution is made, subject to applicable tax rules.
Your charitable assets have the potential to grow.
Funds within the DAF may be invested and potentially grow tax-free, allowing more of your charitable dollars to support the causes you care about.
You recommend grants to eligible nonprofits.
You can recommend grants from your DAF to qualified charitable organizations on a schedule that works with your philanthropic goals. The sponsoring organization retains legal control of the funds and approves grant distributions.
